Avoiding products that contain sulfates, alcohols, or fragrances will keep the hair hydrated. Sulfates, alcohol and fragrances strip away the natural oils and moisture which will leave the hair feeling frizzy, dry and brittle.
When it comes to washing your wig, treat it as if it is your natural hair. But just like natural hair, washing too frequently will cause damage. If you are washing too often, a custom-coloured wig will eventually fade and possibly become lighter than what it originally was. It will also make the hairs become dry and brittle. The same concept applies to overuse of heated styling tools.
Tracking down the right shampoo and conditioner for your wig can be a challenge. While sulfates are in many different hair products, that are, in fact, your wigs worst enemy. They contain salts and only have one purpose, to make products foam. If you wear your wig on a daily basis and use adhesive products, it is recommended you wash your wig once every two weeks. I recommend buying a second wig so you can alternate between wigs. In this case, wash your wigs twice a month depending on product build up and how you wear them. The after care for a custom-coloured wig is very important, like treating your natural hair once it has been coloured at the salon. To ensure your wig lasts for as long as possible it is recommended that you don’t sleep with it on. Sleeping with your wig on causes the hairs to rub against your bedding which will cause tangling and your wig will require additional combing. However, if you prefer to sleep with your wig on it is essential you wear satin/silk bonnet to help minimise snagging, dryness and breakage. Cotton sheets can absorb moisture from your wig hair, causing dryness. A bonnet is amazing to hold natural and pre styled curls overnight. You may also want to use a silk pillow/bedding.
A wide tooth comb is an essential tool to avoid shedding. When combing the hair wet, I would advise you to start at the very ends of the hair and work your way up. This prevents the hair from being pulled out of the lace and wig cap.
As tempting as it may be to use adhesives to secure your wig, alcohol products like hair spray or wig glue remover causes the hairs to become brittle and break at the root of the wig. This area is the most fragile part of the wig. Because each individual strand of hair is hand-tied to the lace, a harsh removal of the wig when it is glued to the head can cause balding on the lace. Because the harsh chemicals cause the hair to dry out, the hair will become prone to break or snap around the hair line. I would recommend using wig tape with a day-to-day hold and to gently remove with lukewarm water. If your wig does not need an adhesive, it is advised to not use it!
